I Ran a Freelance Sales Job Post Through AI—and It Spit Out 5 Red Flags

How to use AI to spot scams, tailor your resume, and land legit freelance sales work.

When I was laid off, I knew I didn’t want to jump right back into corporate life. I wanted more freedom, autonomy, and a chance to finally build something on my own terms. So I started exploring freelance and fractional sales opportunities.

And let me tell you, it’s a jungle out there.

If you’re in the same boat, you’ve probably come across job posts that sound amazing. Flexible hours. High commissions. Warm leads. No cold calling. Maybe even daily pay.

But after looking into one listing that seemed too good to be true, I ran it through ChatGPT, and the red flags it pointed out were eye-opening.

Here’s what I’ve learned the hard way, and what you should look out for before applying.

🚩 Red Flags to Watch For

1. Too-good-to-be-true claims
“Make $60 per sale working just 30–45 minutes a day!” That sounds great, but if it were that easy, wouldn’t everyone be doing it?

2. No interview required
Most legitimate companies (especially in sales) want to know who they’re bringing on board. “No interview” usually means no vetting, because it’s not really a job, it’s a recruitment funnel.

3. Vague or shifting company identities
One listing said, “We are NOT a company; we are a growing network of independent agents.” Translation: they’re avoiding responsibility.

4. Sketchy application links
. If the post sends you to five different third-party sites like ZipRecruiter, Wispflex, Mysmartpros, and Employmark, just back away.

5. Heavy emphasis on “no cost to you”
If they have to say “no fees” over and over, it’s probably because people have asked… for good reason.

🧠 Use AI to Work Smarter, Not Harder

This part changed the game for me.

You don’t need to be a techie to let AI make your job search faster and sharper. Here’s how I use ChatGPT like a virtual assistant:

  • Check a job description for red flags
“Does this sound legit? What’s concerning in this sales job post?”

  • Research the company before applying
“Here’s the company’s website and LinkedIn. Can you summarize what they do, their values, and any standout info?”

  • Tailor your resume and cover letter
“Help me rewrite my resume summary to align with this job description.”

It’s basically your pre-call research, resume writer, and cover letter coach rolled into one (and it never needs coffee).
